Guests & cigarette butts.

Postby Blue Lk » Tue Jun 16, 2009 8:54 am

I am a smoker myself  & I hate butts around the yard.I do not smoke indoors .I have a bunch of wine bottles that I spray painted to use for ashtrays. There is one on every deck,at the dock & every outdoor sitting area I have.I tell my smoking guests to use these & the butt problem is pretty much gone.
I thought I would share this not so original idea.If you are like me,you can easily lay your hands on some wine bottles'
Old enough to know better, young enough to do it anyway!

I hate butts on the ground too - a huge peeve of mine. However, what I hate even more is the smell of WET butts, so I don't think I could handle emptying the wine bottle when it got full or wet. I would also need to recycle the bottle.
Last year we had ONE guest visit us who smoked. There wasn't an issue as she picked up after herself.

We use old coffee cans. I'm a convert & can't stand the smell & sight of old butts. You can lid up the tin to contain the odor. Not pretty but does the trick.
I don't need the instruction manual ... I can figure out how to break it all by myself!

I have mini galvanized pails full of sand with some decorative magnetic do-dads placed around the property. I use a slotted spoon to remove the butts and dispose of them (think scooping kitty litter). Myself and most of our friends have quit smoking, but we still have a few hold-outs.

My feeling is smokers help keep this country running with money (taxes)
more than most pay for income tax
so provide something for them just don't complain about them
they not bad people just hooked

Not to be argumentative (but I will be anyway  ) ... not sure that holds up when considering how much smokers "tax" (pun intended) the health care system disproportionately in treatment on of cancers, emphysema and other related maladies

Like I said, I'm a reformed and there's not many more annoying a creature as a reformed smoker

In 1991, smoking-attributable health care costs in Canada were $2.5 billion (CAN). Additional smoking-attributable costs included $1.5 billion for residential care, $2 billion due to workers' absenteeism, $80 million due to fires and $10.5 billion due to lost future income caused by premature death. Adjustments for future costs if smoking had not occurred and smokers had not died were estimated to be $1.5 billion. According to this analysis, smokers cost society about $15 billion while contributing roughly $7.8 billion in taxes. The results indicate that smoking-attributable costs in Canada have increased steadily since 1966 to the 1991 value of $15 billion. Nevertheless, while the determination of smoking-attributable costs is important, the issue continues to be public health.

It is not any better now since health costs have outstripped smoke revenue.

knew that would rise a few here

ya know faulty alternators in cars cause millions of dollars in absenteeism
I can pull so called facts about anything you want good or bad
blown rad hoses
dirty windshields cause how many deaths? hmmm let me look

Booze causes more for liver, stomach, and just plain family beatings
accidents causing injury or death

someone dies at 84 and said to have lung cancer
he/she is pulled in on the smoking caused this
and stats go up

Statistics are a game played to get the answer you need to hear
That is why most stats are just BS and have very little meaning

so in the mess of wording bushman
you have this
smoking-attributable health care costs in Canada were $2.5 billion
while contributing roughly $7.8 billion in taxes

taking out the crap like being absent from work? don't even know how that is a stat

give it a rest
when the tax dollars are gone you will all know it

By the way Smoking is bad just for the record

Most of my friends don't smoke or have quit. I'm one of the last holdouts. I have ashtrays in my out buildings and down by the dock or use the firepits. All guests who smoke are told no butts on the ground.

Simple rule: no smoking at my place. MIL does not like that and goes for long walks to puff up. Fine by me...
